Bit of a disclaimer for this one: a vast majority of this book will not hit without some prerequisite reading. Namely Jung and Freud – Dreams and The Interpretation of Dreams would be the best primer. You will not be wasting your time. As someone with a section of their home library solely dedicated to dreams, I see those two and this work as the holy trinity.
With the foundation out of the way, Hillman's imperfect masterstroke flips the long held narrative of dreams as a space to process conscious life and instead examines the dream space as a truly distinct shadow realm, serving as a mirror to waking life. He starts by examining the extensive work of both Jung and Freud before all but deconstructing (our very much still widely accepted primary operating model of) depth psychology.
This complicated, endlessly rewarding was remarkably published almost 50 years ago now. On one hand even more remarkable, and on another perfectly reasonable considering our instinct to maximize pleasure/avoid pain, is how little this has affected the current state of dream work, research and depth psychology. We largely aren't ready for what isn't immediately and scientifically verifiable. Oh well. At least those of us who are curious can take full advantage of the least explored part of human consciousness, with the help of Hillman's map of the underworld.
