Dr. Maté is an extremely controversial figure for more reasons than I can list here. There are massive swaths of the medical community who cannot hear or trust a word this man has to say due to his (often callously and unapologetically) hammering on the part theory part proven idea that all addiction, chronic illness and (most) neurodivergence are rooted in childhood trauma. Don't throw the breakthrough out with the bathwater.
His written works and research have largely centered on either addiction, parenthood or ADHD — The Myth of Normal does its best to unite all three and some connective tissue to boot. As much cultural critique as it is self help, even if you hate the guy this is a required read if you've ever dealt with addiction, chronic illness or neurodivergence — so 99.9% of us and 100% of people reading this right now.
