What started as a truly do-not-give-a-fuck NYC media gossip blog, morphed into an all encompassing gossip blog and then eventually a news, current events, film/tv reviews, and restaurant review juggernaut. That was before famously imploding and being forced to shut down at the hands of none other than... Hulk Hogan? Via a lawsuit secretly funded by a vengeful Peter Thiel (out for blood after being publicly outed by the publication years prior)? Truth could not possibly be stranger than fiction in this case.
Gawker had a deep, talented crew of writers, not a care in the world and a ravenous audience. A beautiful equation that was too good not to come to an end eventually. They've relaunched twice since but it is so far removed from the original energy that it doesn't even feel mention worthy.
