Schnapsidee, literally translated to "booze idea", more accurately describes a foolish, crazy, or absurdly impractical idea, often suggesting it was conceived while drunk.

Our closest english phrases are "drunken idea" or "crackpot idea," but to have a single word that refers to plans that sound brilliant at first but are completely unreasonable upon sober reflection is brilliant in and of itself.
