Atlantis by Sun Ra (1969)

Atlantis is regarded as the key prototype for Sun Ra's performances through the 1970s, which ultimately became what he is most well known for. The seminal, avant-garde free jazz sound showcases the Arkestra’s transition into space-age electronic sounds, notably featuring early use of the Hohner Clavinet and synthesizers.

It was recorded at a 1967 concert at the Olatunji Center of African Culture in New York (otherwise referred to as 'Atlantis').

The title track is one of Ra's most epic pieces, while virtually indescribable, the sonic churnings and juxtaposed images reveal a brilliant display of textures and tonalities set against an ocean of occasional rhythms.

Whether Jazz or any genre, I particularly love the recordings that highlight the origins of what ends up becoming a major transition for the artist in question.
