As a supergroup (arguably hip hop's first) formed by disillusioned Tommy Boy artists Prince Paul, RZA, Frukwan and Poetic, Gravediggaz were the first to utilize horror themed imagery and lyrics in conjunction with over the top black comedy and satire to vent their frustrations with the hip hop record industry at the time and create a whole new genre (horror core) in the process.
The album's concept satirizes the gangsta rap of the early 1990s by using death, murder, suicide, overdoses, burials and the grim reaper himself as vehicles to address black life at street level. Luckily half the group were incredible producers in their own right and the lush, minor key laden beats serve as the perfect accompaniment to all of that lyrical drama.
