One of the most influential albums ever recorded, MBV's Loveless is the result of a painstaking process (the band recorded at nineteen different studios over the course of more than two years) that set a bar so high, the band collapsed under the weight.
While there were some examples of shoegaze brewing prior, especially MBV's first (also spectacular) full length Isn't Anything, this is the true watershed moment from the genre's progenitors. Lead Kevin Shields found a way to turn the guitar into a thousand new instruments and inspire generations of your favorite musicians, producers and sound engineers in the process.
Though the album fully delivers on its lofty promise, the band failed to deliver a third record, pressure drove Kevin insane and they broke up shortly thereafter. There is a happy ending to the story however, 22 years after Loveless' release, the band finally delivered that third album, 2013's m b v, to widespread critical acclaim.
