Believe it or not, Can's Monster Movie is their more commercial second shot at a full length release after every label they were in contact with refused their first attempt. This album makes other 'experimental' albums of its year, Yellow Submarine or The Velvet Underground S/T or In the Court of the Crimson King, look like Ed Sheeran.
Though Amon Düül II's 1969 'Phallus Dei' is more oft sited as the very first Krautrock release, calling that a masterpiece would be a stretch. Monster Movie brings together elements of psychedelic rock, blues, free jazz and world music along with, most importantly, use of improvisation, experimentation, tape editing and sound layering to launch a new genre.
In case the album's first three tracks didn't do enough to solidify its status as a freaky German ecosystem, the 20-minute closing track, edited down from 6 hours of improvisation, should doo it.
